Copenhagen: The Perfect City Break
If you are looking for the perfect trip for a couple of days or even just for the day then Copenhagen is the place for you. Having travelled to Copenhagen every year since 2015, we have become somewhat experts in everything to do with this beautiful place. Put simply; Copenhagen is magical and you will want to return. So, save these tips for your next trip and your next one or even the one after that.
Transport to and from the airport
Copenhagen is such an accessible city and public transport is both quick and easy to use. I would recommend using the Metro to travel into the city as they arrive every few minutes from the airport and take around 20 minutes to get into the city centre. You will need to purchase a 3 zones ticket from the airport into the city centre and this will cost you around 36 DKK or just over £4. The great thing about buying a ticket for any of the transport options in Copenhagen is that the tickets in the Greater Copenhagen area are integrated so if you buy a ticket for the metro this would also be valid on a train and also a bus.
Copenhagen Card
Is it worth it to buy the Copenhagen card during your stay? Yes! The Copenhagen card gains you access into more than 80 attractions in the city itself as well as the hop on hop off buses and canal tours. All of the main attractions are included like many of the museums and palaces and if you're travelling with children; Copenhagen Zoo and Tivoli Gardens. You can get tickets ranging from 1 day to 5 days and children under 11 are free. Between the attraction entry fees and the transport you can be sure to be saving money plus you may even visit places you wouldn't have thought of before.
Tivoli Gardens
Tivoli Gardens is one of the biggest attractions in Copenhagen. It is an amazing idea at any time of year and has to be on your to do list. It opened in 1843 and has kept its old fashioned charm including one of the oldest wooden rollercoasters in the world which was built in 1914. Trust us, it is an experience you shouldn't miss particularly with the member of the staff at the back manning the brake! As well as the rides, the park is a hub of activity with events, shops and the Tivoli food hall which has a variety of restaurants, stalls and stands.
Frederiksberg
Frederiksberg is a city within the capital region of Denmark. It is a lovely, residential area with many green spaces and gorgeous shops and cafes. It is to Copenhagen what Chelsea is to London. Walk around and stop off for coffee and many of the independent coffee shops or have a wander through the historical Frederiksberg gardens which spreads out for 64 hectares. Next to Frederiksberg gardens is Søndermarken; a public park where locals enjoy spending time all year round.
Carlsberg Brewery
Not far from Frederiksberg is the Carlsberg Brewery. Here you can view an interactive exhibition about the history of Carlsberg beer as well as getting a lesson on how the beer is brewed. You can even have a taste of it yourself at the end of the tour with a pint in the Carlsberg bar. This is cited as a historical tour as well as a highlight for beer enthusiasts and it is certainly worth a visit.
Copenhagen Zoo
Copenhagen Zoo is a fabulous place to visit and is well worth spending a day wandering around. It is an easy place to navigate and there are many things to explore. There is a lot to see including animals that you may not see at other zoos such as pandas and polar bears. It is a well organised zoo with many places to get something to eat or drink as well as shops to look around. We visited at Christmas time and this was particularly special as there were also market stalls set up and the zoo was decorated beautifully for the season.
Canal Tour
Nyhavn is the perfect place to visit on any trip to Copenhagen. From here you can get the classic view of the cute and cosy coloured buildings that you will have seen on many pictures. You can grab a drink or just have a stroll along the colourful street. You can also book a canal tour from Nyhavn which will take you on an hour long trip seeing some of the main attractions in the city like Christiansborg palace and the Little Mermaid statue.
Where to Stay: Wake up Hotel Borgergade
If you are looking to be close to many of the biggest attractions and to excellent public transport links then Wake up Hotel Borgergade is the perfect location. It is situated a short walk from Nyhavn where you can find the most famous picture taken in the city; the coloured buildings lining the harbour. The hotel is also close to the shopping street Stroget which is one of the longest pedestrian shopping streets in Europe as well as the department store Magasin which is situated in Kongens Nytorv.
Where to Eat: Cafe Vivaldi
Cafe Vivaldi is the perfect place where there is guaranteed to be something for everyone. It is part of chain of restaurants which you will find in many other parts of Denmark but it has a homely feel and the portions are huge! You can get meals from sandwiches to salads and burgers and they also do some good cocktails. There is something for everyone at Cafe Vivaldi and there are two main ones in Copenhagen; one located just off Stroget close to the Magasin Department Store and there is also one facing Tivoli Gardens.
Budget Dining Option: 7-Eleven
If you are looking for more of a budget option or you are just looking for a snack during the day, you can't go wrong with 7-Eleven during your trip to Copenhagen. From your morning coffee to reasonably priced hot dogs and sandwiches it is a quick and easy meal that fits in with your busy day. Everything is fresh and in a city that can get quite expensive, it is a worthwhile visit.
